COMMENTS:
=========
Once again, way to go everyone. Thanks for supporting the GUS, from
gamers like the Street Fighter II Turbo and Lemmings 3D, and all those
GUS patches for games, to all those GUS sound files players (notice how
many subdirectories we have under the "sound" directory nowadays?!?),
to all those real cool graphical music disks, to Gravis for continually
improving upon their programs and making them available for free!! and
special thanks to those who transfers all the new files from the Gravis
BBS and submit them to EPAS so that we can have it in our archives! to
those whoare creating all the cool tools for the GUS like the TSR cdplayer,
ear training program, to specialty stuff like OS/2 drivers and mod
players.....and.... I can go on and on and on.... so I'll just stop here
and give a BIG thanks to everyone! Way to go!
There is one thing that we've done to make the submit directory a little
cleaner. I keep getting complaints from users who are not too impressed
with those who create directories or make an empty file where the
filename is just a request for something. So what I have done in EPAS's
submit directory is to create a directory named "1REQUESTS" where you
can all put your requests in and leave the main submit dir clean.
Thanks!
If anyone find any errors anywhere, please let me know. Thanks!
Happy GUSing!

I agree with him, if people aren't satisfied about there current system, maybe
they should think about switching to another system.
Very soon there will be Clone Macintosh machines available. Running on the
PowerPC chip and the Mac OS.
I work with an PowerMacintosh 6100 with a DOS compatible card and SB16
installed. I am currently running WIN 95 beta in the DOS environment, and i must
say it looks nice but its not stable yet, but hey i'am not complaining cuz i
know it's just a beta version.
I am glad that i've could installed it on the DOS compatible card and that it
reconized the hardware.
At home i have a DOS machine, why ? Cuz it's cheaper and there are more games
for it yet, but as soon as the Mac clones are on the market and the prices are
lower, then i'm considdering to switch to a new system.

No idea if it will do what you want, but there is a thing called
'mrouter' around on the net (try archie to find it). It's a windows
MIDI driver that provides one MIDI output device, and one MIDI input
device, and just routes stuff sent to the output so it appears on
the input. I'm not sure if Recording Session allows the selection
of arbitrary MIDI output devices - if not you might have to send
its output to MIDI Mapper, and setup MIDI Mapper to output to the
MIDI router. Then set the other application to take input from MIDI
Router.

That is precisely what it does on my Alesis SR-16... The SR-16 has 40
predefined and user defined drum sets each consisting of 12 percussive
instruments. Only one drum set can be active at a time. The program change
chooses which drum kit the device uses. There are some other functions
assigned to the program change event as well, but the point is, drum machines
do use that event.

Sure, Sierra just announced that they won't release another game ever for the
Win 3.1 platform... All games are now to be developed for Win95. This is all
nice and good except that the "Final Beta" is now going into another release,
the expected ship dates are getting pushed back again, and we may not see the
new windows until 96. We all know the release version will have bugs anyway.
It is an enevitable fact that any project of the proportion of Win 95 will
have bugs. So, is everyone just supposed to wait until 1997 to develop any
new games?
>OS/2 fans, note the "it's my opinion" bit. I know you all think OS/2 is

The recent success of OS/2 does not mean it will take over the world but it
does mean that people are aware there are choices other than Microsoft for
their operating platform. There are 1 million people Warping right now and
another 2 million using 2.x. For these 3 million people, there is only one
real choice of a sound card... Sound Blaster. I am an OS/2 user and I had a
difficult time choosing between a Turtle Beach card (superior sound and midi
quality to GUS) and The GUS MAX (lower priced, supported games). In the end I
chose the GUS because they said they were supporting OS/2. Now Turtle Beach
has announced they will support OS/2 and their newer cards already work just
by installing Sound Blaster Support. Very disappointing to me...
Please, Gravis. There are 3 million of us out here who don't have a real
sound card to choose from with OS/2. That's not an insignificant market.

Subject: GUS with Linux and Sony CD ROM
Hi to all the happly little campers out there in GUS land.
Problem : I have a 486 with a GUS MAX and off this I am running a, let me get
this right, an "OPTICS STORAGE, Dolphin 8000AT CD ROM 2X" This drive operates
via the standard SONY AT interface port on the GUS card and is pretty
common in Australia. Anyway I have as yet been unable to get it to work
under Linux ver 1.1.94. If any one has any suggestions on how to fix this
problem could they please let me know. (direct email is OK)
The drive works perfectly under DOS, WIN3.11 & OS2.
I also have a SB16 with all interfaces (SONY PANA MITS) if it can be driven
off this please inform me, but I found no such option when building my last
kernel.
Please no flames, I did not buy the SB16, I won it in a raffle. Also the
raffle was free to enter!

Subject: The g-list: Where?
Hi all fellow GUS-users!
I've heard it mentioned that there is a list of how to get various
games to work with the GUS & GUSMAX. Does anybody know where this
list can be found? It was referred to as the "glist" last I saw it
mentioned... I haven't been able to locate it on any ftp sites yet :(
If there is such a list I would expect that a lot of people would be
interested in it - why not upload it to an ftp site and post the path
to the digest!?

There is a problem with SVGA games using ultramid if you
have a cirrus logic card. I first noticed it when I was
playing the 7th guest. The game's sound was ruined by all
kind of annyoying clicks.
The problem seems to be an incompatibility between the
vesa-driver that's in the CL5426/5428 and ultramid.
The solution is quite simple. You'll have to use an up-to-date
vesa driver like the univbe50 driver or the driver that
comes with SimCity2000 for example. It'll cost you some
extra memory, but the clicks are gone.

The problem is your CL5426 card. I solved the problem by running one of
the VESA drivers on the 7th Guest CDROM, which I had to use to get 7th
Guest to run with my SB16 without making a repetitive clicking noise.
The driver was in the paradise directory, I believe, and was called
vesa.com or vesa.exe.
Thanks for your post which triggered my brain to make the proper connections
that lead me to try this fix. Now I won't need to return my ACE card.

I guess there is a different install program for the CD version and the
disk version. There was no GUS option in the sound setup menu for the CD
version. Any suggestions on how to get System Shock to work with GUS using
the CD version?

I've been using OS/2 since May '92. I have no illusions about OS/2
taking over the world's desktops. However, it has been steadily
gaining market share and is years ahead of Win95. I suspect that my
next system will be a PowerPC running OS/2.
It seems like both OS/2 users & GUS users have more in common with
each other than they might care to admit. Both products are excellent
and both have less than average support from software developers.
One final note:
A friend of mine writes software for the NT platform, and he calls
Win95 pure trash, and he says that NT is THE Microsoft OS of the future.
I believe him. I don't know what you would call Win95, but if I were
you I sure wouldn't buy it when it first comes out. To hell with the hype.
If you must buy a new OS soon, and you don't want OS/2, buy NT 3.5.
Forget Win95.

This is a strange response of the Interwave chip. Wouldn't it not matter
if Gravis doesn't release drivers for their Interwave-based card on time
when there are drivers for other Interwave-based cards? Wouldn't drivers
for other Interwave-based cards work for Gravis' Interwave-based cards?
If all SB-based cards (100% hardware compatible that is) work with the
same driver, then wouldn't make sense for all Interwave-based cards to
work with the same driver?

I experienced the same problem. Someone wrote me (forgot his name, sorry
no credits:-) )not to use General Midi for music but Soundblaster (you
just have to copy the midi drivers for the Gus over the Sblaster drivers).
For some strange reason I now get music in every level.

Microsoft officials confirm that beta versions of Windows 95 include a
small viral routine called Registration Wizard. It interrogates every
system on a network gathering intelligence on what software is being run
on which machine. It then creates a complete listing of both Microsoft's
and competitors' products by machine, which it reports to Microsoft when
customers sign up for Microsoft's Network Services, due for launch later
this year.
"In Short" column, page 88, _Information Week_ magazine, May 22, 1995
The implications of this action, and the attitude of Microsoft to plan
such action, beggars the imagination.

An update on this. A friend of mine got hold of a copy of the beta test CD
of Win95, and set up a packet sniffer between his serial port and the
modem. When you try out the free demo time on The Microsoft Network, it
transmits your entire directory structure in background.
This means that they have a list of every directory (and, potentially every
file) on your machine. It would not be difficult to have something like a
FileRequest from your system to theirs, without you knowing about it. This
way they could get ahold of any juicy routines you've written yourself and
claim them as their own if you don't have them copyrighted.
Needless to say, I'm rather annoyed about this.
So spread the word as far and wide as possible: Steer clear of Windows 95.
There's nothing to say that this "feature" will be removed in the final
release.
Cheers
David

Does anybody have an optimized patches.ini for Simcity 2000?
Or even better yet a program which can scan a heap of mid's or xmi's
so you can make you for what even game we may come across.
Thanks in advance.

When you say Maniac Mansion II, are you refering to Day Of The
Tentacle? If so, I only got it working using SBOS. Because, if I
remember it right, you can't select two soundcards (one for GM and one
for SB DAC).
For Sam & Max (the disk version, not the CD), I used MegaEM and it
worked fine. Just use the "Advanced Soundcard Install" to set the
thing up.

Subject: MAXSBOS v0.21
I recently downloaded both v0.10 (beta) and v0.21 of MAXSBOS.
For some reason, v0.21 from gus0046.zip wouldn't work - driver.exe
would run, but loader.exe would claim that it was the wrong version.
In the end, I had to return to v0.10 (contained in maxsbos.zip).
Has anyone else had this problem?
Thanks,
Keong

Subject: RE: Interwave - an answer to our dreams
Dear P. Chen,
Thankyou for your views on the AMD Interwave. I have posted twice to
the GUS Digest asking who knows for sure if Gravis will be using the
AMD Chip, and also discussing the possibility that the Interwave chip
will NOT be exclusively used by Gravis. Until now the only discussion
on this topic has been from some almost religiously blind believers in
GUS- espousing the *fact* that ofcourse the chip would be used in the
next GUS- proof coming from the claim that Gravis has licensed the GF1
chip design to AMD as a basis for the Interwave. Gravis probably did
license the GF1 design to AMD, but doesn't that give AMD the right to
do what it likes with its new chip?
>From the specs published by AMD, it looks more and more like Mr P.Chen
is absolutely right in his assertion that other major players like C.L.
etc are likely to use the same device in their offerings. There are
even rumours that some motherboard OEMs are looking to add the
Interwave directly.
For once on the Digest we have someone with a real and balanced view of
the competitive world.
Well done Mr Chen!
Daryl James- Australia
PS - I like my GUS and would probably buy the next one if it stacked up
against its competitors- how it stacks up for you might be based on
performance, quality, price and support, but would you rush out and buy
the next GUS just because of some religious devotion?
If you answered yes... Get a life!
